3 years ago, Gavin and his editor, Johnny (MAKINOV) released a short video under the working title of Day & Night. It was the first teaser for their fixed gear bike film and already showed some signs promise.
A short year later, they released the trailer for what we now know as BÖIKZMÖIND. With amazing visuals and silky smooth editing, it quickly dawned on my that this film was not to be missed.
Another 24 months down the line, it was finally finished and was premiered in Bristol. With the car filled with 3 bikes, 2 passengers and myself, I drove us out to the beautiful west country, literately through a storm to catch Gavin’s long awaited film.
After following the progress from the every beginning, my expectations were high and the BÖIKZMÖIND trailer had the film looking like it was going towards the kind of fixed gear film that followed the likes of MASH and Macaframa. Not that I have a issue with either of them but they can get a little repetitive, so I was glad to Gav tell me that the trailer doesn’t represent the finish product in any way shape or form.

At around 7:45 the crowd started to gather and it quickly became apparent that the outdoor space of the Millennium Square might have been the only place that would have been able to cope with the huge number of people that attended the event.
As people began to sit down the heavens opened upon us and the inevitable British shower started to fall, fortunately they didn’t last long. The moment the first frame started on the big screen, the rain stopped and the clouds broke apart enough for a beautiful sunset. I still think Gav made a deal with mother nature.

So, after 3 long years, the film was finally being screened and I couldn’t have picked a better location myself.
When Gavin said that the trailer didn’t represent the film at all he wasn’t lying. BÖIKZMÖIND is nothing like your conventional fixed gear film that has a selection of riders bombing hills. It’s much more than just a bike film, too really enjoy this film you have to see it as a documentary about fixed gear bikes and the community in Bristol (which is one of the best I’ve seen).
The interviews really set BÖIKZMÖIND apart from all the other films at there, they give a different depth to the film and really help tie everything together.
The riding footage was fantastic, the fact that Gav is such a nice chap he has managed to get everyone involved in this film on his side and riders were out in force to help him out.
With a 50/50 mixture of interviews and riding, BÖIKZMÖIND was 30minuets of superb filming, beautiful editing and a wonderful original score by Invada.
Gav has a natural eye for filming, his natural photography skills have really come in handy with the cinematography in BÖIKZMÖIND and with the help of other very talented people he has managed to produce a fixed gear bike film that has set some very high standards for UK film makers that are planning a bike film.
I’m sure Gavin will agree with me when I say that the Bristol fixed gear community is incredible, even in the few hours I was there I met some amazing people from all forms of fixed gear backgrounds, all of which were more than happy to chat, getting to know each other and be a part of such an amazing project. And all that really shows in BÖIKZMÖIND. It’s immediately obvious that the community in Bristol is quite literately a community, a huge group of people, ranging from young to old, riding a bike that has no gears and constantly pedalling. It’s really quite something.
What makes it even better is to see this community come out in all its glory, sat on the floor at Millennium Square to watch a home grown fixed gear documentary.

I’d be stoked to buddy.
Check out the BÖIKZMÖIND website for dates and locations if you missed the Bristol premiere. Hopefully it’s somewhere close to you, if its not, get in touch with Gavin.
Let me finish by saying a huge congratulations to Gavin Strange. The brainchild to so many projects that I’ve lost count for directing and producing such an enjoyable, amazing and visually beautiful UK based bike film.
