A few months back my former tutor and best friend asked me to help supervise a college trip out to Venice for this past weekend.
It gave me the chance to have a first hand experience of what it was like to organise a large group trip and what it was like to “teach” some of the students while we was out there.
It was my second time in Venice but the last time I visited the beautiful city I went as a student, photographing anything and everything. So this time I was determined to be more selective with the images I took. I didn’t have a brief for myself nor did I know what I wanted to photograph, but I knew I didn’t want to be coming back to thousands of images to go through and edit.
Thankfully, working with a group of students that focused on fashion photography meant that I had little time to get my camera out the bag.
The above images are a nothing spectacular or fancy, but I guess that was my goal. I went on this trip as a teacher/supervisor and if I had the chance to take a photo, I would. All the images I took while out there were snapshots, images I could have taken with my camera phone, but I guess thats why I love them. It’s been such a long time since I’ve gone somewhere and not had to think about clients or briefs. It gave me a chance to really enjoy myself as a photographer and it reminded me that taking snapshots are more important than I thought.
As for being on the other side of the education system, organising a trip for 17 students isn’t as hard as it seemed, although the hassle at the airport and hotel does still make me mad. Having a friend in the education system does have it’s benefits and it was a treat to be able to work and advice some of the most naturally talented students that I’ve met in a long time.
Now, I’m not saying I’m going to go into teaching just yet, but it is something I’d consider in the future. The gratification of helping talented individuals is something I can’t really explain, but it does put a smile on your face when you know you’ve “not changed a person. but guided them to where they should be”.
Enough rambling and serious talk.
The trip was awesome, the company was second to none and I’m happy with the images I took while I was out there.
Looking forward to next year already.
